How To Provide Web Content To Your Web Designer

Your web designer may have requested content from you for your web pages, but you’re uncertain about the best methods of providing content in a way that is beneficial to you both.

Learn how to provide web content to your web designer, and the methods in which to send it.

A common practice for web designers is to request web content information from clients. This practice makes a lot of sense because nobody knows your business like you do. The web designer will create a polished web copy with the information provided, unless the client’s copy is already brilliant.  You may also wish to send video content and a large number of images across to your web designer.

I find the easiest way for my clients to provide content is by dividing up the way content is sent.
  1. IMAGES: Send your high resolution images over the internet using Dropbox or WeTransfer – these online apps can help transfer large volume files or folders over the internet. (best avoid using your email to send these as your email client can become stuck and also become unusable for ages!)
  2. WORDING: Write a Word document adding page information under Uppercase PAGE titles in bold text for each web page, preferably using a separate page for each one.
  3. VIDEO: Links to video content are usually sent via email.  However,  video files are too large to send via email and are best using Dropbox or WeTransfer. There are numerous other ways large files can be sent over the internet. Unlike other large file transfer companies offering ‘pay by the month’ memberships,  File Whopper takes care of humungus file sharing with a ‘pay as you go’ option.
Points to remember when writing content.
  1. Time is money, avoid sending drafts. Make sure you send the final copy which means less time away from emailing back and forward. I find this practice can be time consuming and costly to the client.
  2. No designing required. Leave that up to the web designer. At this stage, you most likely will have provided a couple of links of the sites you really like the look of.
  3. Unformatted Word document pages are okay. To make it a lot easier for the web designer, avoid using coloured backgrounds or coloured text. Black and white is simple and easy.
  4. Avoid having too much text which can make a page look cluttered with information.
  5. Avoid using the space bar to create spaces or new lines of text. It takes extra effort to do formatting work, even when the copy provided is excellent!
Writing Your Content

See the example below, which can be copied and pasted onto a Word Document. Note that I have only listed the most common pages used in web design. However, you may add as many titles on your Word document as required.

Replace the Latin words with your own content.

BLOG PAGE

Do you require a blog page?  Do you have blog posts elsewhere that you’d like to add here?  Your blog posts may be downloaded from your old site and saved in an .xml (Excel format) which can be uploaded to your new WordPress website. Ask your web designer about doing that for you.

CONTACT PAGE

Add your business name, address, phone and fax if you have one. It’s never a good idea to advertise your email address on a website. Encourage your site visitors to use the contact form and a linked business telephone number for mobile phone users.
